Duties The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects
the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful
citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by
providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth,
strengthening both families and communities within the
Commonwealth. DJJ is seeking a Grounds Assistant. The role is
responsible for the cultivation and care of the landscaping and
grounds surrounding buildings. Performs general grounds landscaping
duties both inside and outside of a secure juvenile correctional
complex. Coordinate activities to assure grounds and related areas
are maintained in a safe and clean condition for residents, staff,
and the public. The incumbent must have a valid driver’s license as
well as the ability to meet physical demands to include lifting
heavy objects. This is an hourly/wage position and is limited to
1500 hours to average 29 hours per week in a 12-month period. This
position does not include the state benefit package. Minimum
Qualifications Considerable knowledge of grounds maintenance
procedures, methods, equipment, tools, supplies, and materials used
in gardening and grounds maintenance. Demonstrated ability to
receive, assess, prioritize and coordinate response to grounds
maintenance work orders to meet schedules and timelines.
Demonstrated ability to read, write, understand, and communicate
effectively. Demonstrated ability in operation and maintenance of
vehicles, tractor, hand and power tools, and equipment used in
ground maintenance. Knowledge of related safety and health
practices. Additional Considerations High School graduate or
