For over 100 years, at Riverside Health System, we have made it our

ORCIP is a 24-week paid internship which includes integrated
clinical, theory, and laboratory orientation to the role of the
many roles of the perioperative nurse in the acute and ambulatory
surgical setting. These include roles as surgical circulating and
scrubbing in the operating room as well as pre & post-surgery and
the post anesthesia recovery unit. Participants are supervised by
experienced and skilled nurses and educators. Access to and
facilitation of the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses
(AORN) - Periop 101 - online modular course is provided with
completion required within a specified course schedule. Library,
laboratory and clinical learning experiences will be conducted on
the campus of The Riverside Education & Workforce Development
Campus (316 Main Street-Newport News) and within the operating
rooms of Riverside Regional Medical Center and affiliated Riverside
facilities as designated. Upon successful completion, participants
will receive a certificate of completion and 40 CEUs from the AORN
and be eligible to apply for open Perioperative nursing positions
within Riverside Health System and its affiliates.
Works under the supervision of the Nurse manager and the Director
and is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementing, and
evaluating the total nursing care of assigned patients. The RN may
work in a variety of settings in the Perioperative Services Complex
and roles within Riverside Health System. The RN utilizes
communication critical thinking problem solving and decision making
to create a care plan for each patient based on physiological
psychosocial and cultural diversity. Responsible for supervising
and delegating non-professional personnel working directly with
him/her to ensure optimum patient care. Must demonstrate competence
in dealing with age related needs of the specific patient
populations served in the Perioperative Services units/departments.
Works under the direction of leadership and a multi-disciplinary
team to provide a comprehensive range of services or clinical care
associated with and in accordance with standards of excellence
established by Riverside Health system and facility goals and
strategic plans.
Riverside began serving the Virginia Peninsula community in 1916.
In 1963, Riverside moved to the present 72-acre location in Newport
News on J. Clyde Morris Boulevard. A 450-bed facility, Riverside
Regional Medical Center is the Virginia Peninsulas most
comprehensive medical facility combining the most recent
computerized medical technology with a healing environment. The
Pavilion is a 250,000 sq. ft., $107 million, 3-story addition to
Riverside Regional Medical Center, which opened in 2013. This acute
care facility provides a regional cancer care center, the Peninsula
regions only comprehensive stroke center, the areas only open-heart
surgery program, the regions only Level II Trauma Center, and a
cornerstone neurosciences program that includes the Chesapeake,
Riverside and University of Virginia Radiosurgery Center.
Qualifications: Applicants must be a Registered Nurse with a valid,
unrestricted license either in the State of VA or a compact state
upon starting the program Board eligible graduates of Riverside
College of Professional Nursing will also be considered.
References: Applicants must submit at least one professional
reference from an educational or employment source related to the
applicant's performance potential in a surgical environment.
Education: Graduate of a programmatically accredited (NLN, ACEN or
CCNE) nursing program.
Shadowing: Applicants without previous experience in a surgical
setting will be required to perform 4 hours of shadowing at
Riverside Regional Medical Center. Select applicants will be
contacted to schedule appointments and pre-shadowing education
requirements.
Interview: Select applicants may be subject to group interviews
with various Surgical Services managers and members from the Talent
Acqusition Team, Human Resources and Riverside College of Health
Careers.
Required of Those Selected For Internship: Employee Health Post
Offer Assessment to include current immunizations, current CPR
certification.
Work Commitment: Selected applicants must sign a two (2) year work
agreement for a full-time position or three (3) year work agreement
for a part-time position within Riverside Health System. Applicants
selected for positions within targeted facilities will sign their
agreement with the specific facility. Pay rate during the
internship and terms of hire will be discussed with applicants on
an individual basis by the Talent Acquisition
We have 2 cohorts during the year. The next cohort will be from
July 18, 2022- December 30, 2022.
