Primary Function/General Purpose of Position
The Charge Nurse is a Registered Professional Nurse with
responsibility and accountability for unit operational activities.
Using the Nursing process and clinical knowledge, this role will
coordinate nursing and interprofessional members of the Health Care
team to develop and sustains an environment that promotes
excellence in clinical practice and customer satisfaction, while
striving for optimal efficiency and productivity of all resources.
Adjusts the schedule and patient assignments to accommodate changes
in acuity, patient population, resources & care design. Provides
supervision of staff, clinical support, and assumes management
responsibility for the unit in the absence of the nurse
manager/CCL.
II. Employment Qualifications
1. Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing school and be
currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of
Virginia
2. Is minimally a Clinical Nurse II on our Clinical Ladder
3. BSN or BS required.
4. Must possess the knowledge of clinical, psychological, and
pathophysiological theories related to nursing diagnosis and
treatment, nursing policies & procedures, standards, systems &
equipment as normally acquired through 18-24 months of
experience.
5. Must be able to lift, push and pull up to 50 lbs. and perform
all functions involved in CPR
6. Must have knowledge of/demonstrate management/leadership
theories, teaching skills, and understanding of group dynamics.
Previous work experience in the charge nurse position or
supervisory position preferred.
III. Essential Job Functions
1. Accountability, Competence and Autonomy
Maintains current knowledge of environmental safety standards and
infection control; Utilizes appropriate supplies and equipment.
Demonstrates competence/knowledge of principles of growth and
development for patient populations served, coordinates care to
achieve optimal patient outcomes
Demonstrates depth in clinical knowledge through evidence-based
practice at the unit level and begins to apply knowledge to a
specific patient population.
Communicates effectively with patients and their families regarding
nursing interventions and plan of care.
Communicates and collaborates effectively with other
disciplines.
Delivers quality patient education regarding care and treatment,
medications including side effects, and appropriate discharge
instructions.
Reviews lab values and clinical data, incorporates them into plan
of care and reports per policy and standard of care.
Administers medications according to policy and standard of
care.
Monitors Medical Records for completeness and evidence of
documentation by exception. Ensures regulatory compliance in
documentation
2. Care Delivery Systems
Demonstrates a working knowledge of the Bon Secours core values and

ability to integrate into daily nursing practice.

values into plan of care while maintaining the patient's

Rounds on patients to evaluate safety, quality, and patient
experience
Serves as a resource to staff, patients and family members to

Actively involved in interprofessional collaborative practice
within the care delivery system to ensure care coordination and
continuity of care and optimal patient experience.
Communicates effectively and follows through with other departments
as necessary to resolve operational problems
3. Assesses, supervises and directs day-to-day unit activities to
ensure optimal patient outcomes
Assumes full accountability for tasks delegated to other team
members. Provides clinical expertise to assist staff with patient
care matters
Facilitates appropriate patient placement and safe, efficient
admission, transfer and discharge processes.
Supports staff by ensuring availability of resources required to
provide quality patient care
Continually evaluates quality of patient care and care environment
to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Develops and integrates technical skills and service
excellence.
4. Culture of Safety
Systematically promotes, evaluates and improves workplace safety
for nurses and team
Models Safety first, Safety always behaviors
Involved in facility and system-wide proactive risk assessment and
error management
Involved in the review, action planning and evaluation of patient
safety data at the unit level
Implements and evaluates National Patients Safety Goals
Assess the unit and patient environment for general maintenance and
potentially hazardous conditions and takes corrective action
5. Staffing, Scheduling and Budgeting Processes
Ensures that RN assignments, staffing and scheduling meet the needs
of the patient population based on established guidelines such as
ANS's Principles for Nursing Staffing
Responsible for overseeing staffing levels on a shift-to-shift
basis and long term schedule planning
Arbitrates when necessary to ensure adequate staffing levels are
maintained
Considers skill mix an pertinent patient information when making
assignments
Continually evaluates patient care, environment & staff members to
achieve unit and hospital goals and targets

Collaborates with the nurse manager, using trended data to
redistribute existing resources or obtain additional nursing
resources in the budgeting process
Participates in recruitment/retention assessment and planning
activities.
Participates in interviewing and makes recommendations for hiring
decisions
Provides input for staff performance appraisals and performance
improvement plans
6. Ethics, Privacy, Security and Confidentiality
Seeks support and resources regarding ethical and legal issues as
needed.
Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
Maintains and protects medical records consistent with hospital
policy, Joint Commission, and state and federal regulations.
7. Models professional practice and behavior at all times
Demonstrates computer proficiency and consistently checks emails
through BSHSI account.
Seeks feedback and mentoring from Clinical Care Lead/Nurse manager
and other experienced nurses.
Sets professional practice goals and identifies opportunities for
professional growth.
Maintains competency and knowledge by completing mandatory unit
educational requirements.
Provides leadership in the charge nurse role and resources the
nursing and support staff during the shift
Provides feedback and mentoring to nursing and support staff.
Creates an environment of teamwork, mutual respect, conflict
management. Fosters and encourages open communication and conflict
resolution among staff members. Manages conflict in a timely,
direct and positive manner.
IV. Other Job Functions
1. Accepts temporary reassignments to other nursing units and
performs as a reasonable prudent nurse.
2. Transports specimens, supplies and patients to and from other
departments.
3. Performs other duties as assigned.
V. Working Conditions
The individual performing this job may reasonably anticipate coming
into contact with human blood and other potentially infectious
materials. Individuals in this position are required to exercise
universal precautions, use personal protective equipment and
devices, and learn the policies concerning infection control.
Works in patient care area where there is little exposure to dust,
dirt, noise, etc.
