The Maintenance Repair (Product Group) Job Family is an hourly manufacturing position generally responsible for day to day maintenance and repair of operations equipment and processes.

To date, recruiting for Maintenance Repair (Product Group) personnel has come primarily from other Continental positions who demonstrate an aptitude for the general maintenance field. Other sources include outside recruitment from the local area and other companies.


Likely progression for Maintenance Repair (Product Group) includes entry level technicians, and administrative or technical supervisors.


  • A minimum of a high school education or equivalent GED is required.
  • Must be computer literate and keyboard proficient.
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to utilize basic shop floor math combined with writing skills to prepare various shop floor reports and data input sheets.
  • Must be proficient in basic Metric to English unit conversions.
  • Must have good manual dexterity and excellent visual acuity.
  • Must have good work history and excellent attendance record.
  • Must be willing to work day and night shifts as scheduled.
  • Must be a good listener and be able to follow directions with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work daily as a team member in an industrial environment.
  • Must be able to lift and carry (unassisted) 25 pounds for a distance of at least 100 feet.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficient use of basic hand and power tools, and simple troubleshooting equipment such as a multimeter
  • Minimum of eight (8) years work experience in the maintenance and troubleshooting field is required. A maintenance related journeymen's certification is desirable and may be considered in lieu of work experience.
  • Must be able to read and work effectively from blueprints, layouts, and engineering drawings utilizing geometric dimensioning and tolerating.
  • Must have strong working knowledge and experience with maintenance and troubleshooting of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, including utilization of associated troubleshooting equipment such as a multimeter.
  • Basic background in PLC controlled equipment is desirable.
  • Must be able to utilize and work effectively from basic electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics to troubleshoot facilities related equipment.

    The Maintenance Repair (Product Group) classification utilizes applied technology skills to troubleshoot and resolve technical problems associated with routine repair, maintenance, and operation manufacturing equipment and associated support systems.

    Position requires proficient use of basic electrical and pneumatic fault logic and circuit tracing knowledge to zero in on root cause of equipment failure or non-performance to requirements. These problems could range from simple resetting of sensors to complex breakdowns requiring the Maintenance Repair (Product Group) person to choose appropriate tools or pieces of diagnostic equipment to accomplish a task. Successful Maintenance Repair (Product Group) individuals must fully understand "if-then" and "cause-effect relationships and be able to apply that knowledge to the actual job. This skill requires an individual to have very good observation skills and the ability to remember complicated work procedures. Tasks are performed at a quick pace, typically outside the employee's control.

    Good listening skills are important because many of the recommendations and critical work issues received from technicians, supervisors, and engineering personnel, are most often conveyed verbally. The correct understanding of these issues and related information is vital to the Maintenance Repair (Product Group) individual's success in the job.

    The successful Maintenance Repair (Product Group) person must have a practical working knowledge of reading and working from basic blueprints, layouts, and engineering drawings in the geometric dimensioning and tolerance format. These documents may utilize both English and or metric dimensions.


  • Function as an active team member. Includes coordination of work assignment with other Maintenance Repair (Product Group) personnel in area.
  • Provide support to outside contractor personnel as required.
  • Communicates workflow and other key information to oncoming or relief operator at shift overlaps and shift changes to minimize delays.
  • Interfaces with technical and supervision to assure job assignment is totally understood.
  • Reads and follows designated checklists and work instructions as required. Signs or initials to indicate compliance.
  • Maintains a safe and clean work area and environment.
  • Utilizes personal protective equipment and special clothing/garb as appropriate for assigned area. Observes all safety and environmental requirements of the process and work area. Observes all safety requirements whenever tasks require, such as use of safety clothing, fork lift operations, tag out/lock out procedures, burn permits, ladder climbing, safety harness, contact or proximity with hazardous materials, etc. . .
  • Trains and cross trains new cell operators when assigned.
  • Conduct recovery of production related machines, equipment, and processes from cold starts, and power outages in addition to proper shutdown as appropriate.
  • Prepares and records maintenance related data as required by the process and supervision and prepares appropriate written or computer based reports.
  • Conduct routine minor and preventative maintenance of operations machines, equipment and processes. This includes operator periodic maintenance, alignments, lubrications, and other service schedule requirements.
  • Troubleshoots problems associated with numerous systems involving electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, and thermodynamic principles and operations, and when necessary, advises supervisor of situations for which outside technical help is needed.
  • Runs electrical wiring and control systems in support of new or relocated machinery.
  • Notifies shift supervisory whenever a maintenance issue will impact production operations or whenever a safety issue is outstanding.
  • Traces electrical/hydraulic/water/pneumatic systems piping to determine where in a system a problem or element might be located.
  • In repairing systems, may replace components and parts, including mechanical, electrical, or other parts.
  • Operates drill press, cutoff saws, band saws, hand drills and other hand tools in the execution of duties.
  • Rigs hoists, pulleys, blocks, etc in order to move or secure heavy equipment and machinery related to maintenance.
  • Identifies any repair parts needed for assigned systems or area and completes the requisition information process to obtain the parts.
  • Installs new equipment or reinstalls moved equipment ensuring true alignment and leveling.
  • Restarts equipment in correct sequence after loss of power ensuring that all electrical phases are available.
  • Observes and listens to production machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunction and determine need for adjustment or repair.
  • Refers to technical manuals, blueprints, drawings and other sources of information about equipment and systems to be worked on.
  • Re-assembles and test-operates production equipment to verify correction of malfunction.
  • Repairs or replaces faulty equipment wiring, switches, or relays.
  • Dismantles machine or equipment, using hand tools or power tools, to examine parts.
  • Cleans spills, dependent on circumstances, except for spills that require special handling such as hazardous material and, may provide initial containment for those spills until hazmat personnel arrive.
  • Studies blueprints, sketches, or specifications to analyze potential sources of problems and to determine likely repairs.
  • Conducts any other work assignment as required or directed by supervision or management.
